Four post primary schools from across Europe, Carrickfergus College (Northern Ireland), IES Ben Gabirol (Spain), Dr George Graf von Arco-Oberschule (Germany) and Istituto Superiore Statale Carlo dell’Acqua (Italy), are working together on a project entitled ‘Minds at Work.’ In celebration of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation students will investigate how individuals and societies from each participating country have contributed to the history, culture and economy of Europe by engaging in innovative and creative thinking. The project will broaden the European perspectives of the participants and challenge them to plan and complete a range of project work which will develop their thinking, creative and entrepreneurial skills in order to prepare them for the world of work within the European Union. Enterprise education will be promoted throughout the project to encourage students to be contributors to the European economy, whilst modern technology will be embraced in all facets of project work. Using the title ‘Minds at work’, the project will address themes in subjects across the curriculum, identifying how subjects such as history, art, science, technology and languages can contribute to the creative process. The project will also promote the development of healthy lifestyles amongst students, encouraging the development of healthy bodies and healthy minds through participation in sport.

One of the first tasks was to introduce our school “Dr. Georg Graf von Arco-Oberschule”, our home town Nauen and our country Germany. Therefore we made the three info-sheets below, which we sent to our partner schools.

Willkommen beim Comenius-Projekt “Minds at Work – Köpfe bei der Arbeit”

Vier europäische Schulen – das Carrickfergus College aus Nordirland, die IES Ben Gabirol Malaga aus Spanien, die IS Carlo Dell’Acqua Legnano aus Italien und die Dr. Georg Graf von Arco-Oberschule Nauen aus Deutschland – arbeiten erneut als Partner in einem Schulprojekt 2009 — 2011 zusammen. Im “Jahr der Kreativität und Neuerungen” werden die Schüler der Partnerschulen erforschen, wie der Einzelne und die Gesellschaft jedes Partnerlandes durch innovatives und kreatives Denken zur europäischen Geschichte, Kultur und Ökonomie beigetragen hat. Das Projekt soll durch verschiedene Inhalte und Aufgaben die Kreativität und das innovative Denken aller Teilnehmer Sowie Deren europäische Perspektive erweitern. Moderne Technologien und praktische Arbeit sollen die Schüler ein wirtschaftliche Themen heranführen. Mit dem Projekttitel “Minds bei der Arbeit – Köpfe bei der Artbeit” werden fächerübergreifende Themen angesprochen, Fremdsprachen, Geschichte, Kunst Sowie Wirtschaft und Technik sind in das Projekt integriert. Ein weiteres Ziel des Projekts ist die Gesunderhaltung von Körper und Geist zu fördern und die Schüler zu sportlichen Aktivitäten zu ermutigen.

Eine der ersten Aufgaben des Projekts war es, unsere Schule “Dr. Georg Graf von Arco-Oberschule”, unseren Heimatort Nauen und unser Land Deutschland vorzustellen. Dazu haben wir die drei oben aufgeführten Info-Seiten erstellt, die wir an unsere Partnerschulen geschickt haben.

COMENIUS products

One of this year’s tasks in the project work is to produce items with the project logo on them. We will exchange the items between the four partnerschool and then sell them on a fair. The profit shall be used for charity. Graf von Arco-Oberschule had different ideas which product to produce. Finally we decided to have the logo printed on pencils or biros but we found that it was impossible to order a small amount of not more than 100 items. So we changed plans and ordered USB sticks. We made advertising posters which will be given to all partner school at the project meeting in Italy in April.

Projekttreffen in Italien
Im April 2010 fuhren 2 Lehrer und 3 Schüler nach Legnano (Italien) zu unserer Partnerschule Carlo Dell’Acqua. Wir besprachen dort die weitere Projektarbeit, tauschten die Produkte aus und erlebten Land und Leute. Wir übergaben unsere USB-Sticks and die Partnerschulen und bekamen im Gegenzug handbemalte Fächer aus Malaga, Stirnbänder aus Legnano und Rezepthefte aus Carrickfergus. Alle diese Dinge werden an den Schulen auf einer “COMENIUS-Messe” verkauft. Unsere Messe findet am 8. Juni 2010 im Kulturzentrum “Blaues Haus” in Nauen statt. Dort wird eine Kunstausstellung der Graf-von-Arco-Oberschule eröffnet, zur der der Bürgermeister und weitere Persönlichkeiten der Stadt Nauen eingeladen sind. Der Verkaufserlös wird der “Kinder-Oase” Nauen gespendet, einer gastronomischen Einrichtung für bedürftige Kinder.

Project meeting in Italy
In April 2010 two teachers and three students went to Legnano (Italy) to visit our partnerschool Carlo Dell’ Acqa. There we talked about further project work, exchanged the products and got to know the country and its people. We gave the USB-sticks to our partner school and got handpainted fans from Malaga, headbands from Legnano and recipe booklets from Carrickfergus. All these things will be sold at a “COMENIUS-Fair”. Our fair will be held on 8th June 2010 in the cultural centre “Blue House” in Nauen. There our school’s arts exhibition will be opened. The Mayor and other representatives of our home town will be invited. The achieved profit will be given to a Nauen restaurant for children in need, the “Kinder-Oase”.

100 Jahre Innovationen
Das erste Projektjahr steht unter dem oben genannten Motto, und deshalb haben die Schüler der 8. Klassen sich mit deutschen Erfindern der letzten 100 Jahre befasst und deren Leben und Leistungen in Powerpoint-Präsentationen dargestellt.

The first project year had the motto “100 years of innovation”. That is why the students of the 8th forms did research on German inventors of the past 100 years and created powerpoint presentations about the inventors and their inventions.

Comenius Fair
Our Comenius Fair where we sold the products of our and the partner schools was a big success. We achieved € 325 which we gave to the “Kinder-Oase”, a restaurant for children in need in our home town Nauen.
Die Comenius-Messe
Unsere Comenius-Messe, auf der wir unsere USB-sticks mit dem Projektlogo und die Produkte der Partnerschulen verkauften, war ein Großer Erfolg. Wir nahmen insgesamt € 325 ein, die wir der “Kinder-Oase” spendeten, einem Restaurant für bedürftige Kinder in unserer Heimatstadt Nauen.

Year Two – 2010/2011
The second year of the Comenius project started with a meeting at the Spanish partner school IES Ben Gabirol in Malaga. Teachers and students of all four partner countries met in November 2010 to plan the activities and project details for year two.
Das zweite Jahr des Comenius-Projekts begann mit einem Treffen an der spanischen Partnerschule IES Ben Gabirol. Lehrer und Schüler aus allen vier Partnerländern kamen im November 2010 zusammen, um die weiteren Projektaktivitäten und -details zu planen.

“100 years of creativity”
This is the motto of the second project year in celebration of the “European Year of Creativity and Innovation”. All partner schools decided to introduce people that have contributed to their country’s culture by creative thinking. The students of Dr. Georg Graf von Arco-Oberschule chose 9 Germans who were creative in different areas of culture and lived within the past 100 years. They researched about those people and their creative ideas and completed Powerpoint presentations about them.

Dies ist das Motto unseres zweiten Projektjahres im “Europäischen Jahr der Kreativität und Innovation”. Alle Partnerschulen einigten sich darauf, Menschen vorzustellen, die durch ihre kreativen Gedanken zur Kultur des Landes beigetragen haben. Die Schüler der Dr. Georg Graf von Arco-Oberschule wählten 9 Deutsche aus, die auf verschiedenen kulturellen Gebieten kreativ waren und die in den vergangenen 100 Jahren lebten. Sie erforschten das Leben dieser Menschen und deren kreative Ideen und erstellten Powerpoint-Präsentationen über sie.

Healthy Living – Comenius Sports Day
On 11th March 2011, all 9-year and 10-year students of Dr. Georg Graf von Arco-Oberschule Nauen took part in our Comenius Sports Day. This event took place at all project partner schools. We worked in different groups: 32 students (8 teams) participated in the sports competition, some worked with the questionnaires about health and lifestyle, which had already been answered by all students some weeks before, some took photos and made videos and some prepared a healthy meal. The competition included pull-ups, triple long jump, free throws, slalom, press-ups, rope-skipping, goal-shooting and sit-ups. It was fun for everybody and all students liked the T-shirts with the “Minds At Work”-logo which had been produced for that special day. The day ended with a healthy meal altogether at our school’s club where former project products were presented. The winners of the competition were awarded cups and all other participants got medals. The results of the questionnaires were shown in diagrams. It will be interesting to see in the blogs of our partner schools how they did their Comenius Sports Day and what results came out with their questionnaires!

Gesunde Lebensweise – Comenius Sporttag
Am 11. März 2011 nahmen alle Schüler der 9. und 10. Klassen der Dr. Georg Graf von Arco-Oberschule Nauen an unserem Comenius Sporttag teil. Dieses Ereignis wurde in allen Partnerschule durchgeführt. Wir arbeiteten in verschiedenen Gruppen: 32 Schüler (8 Mannschaften) nahmen an den Sportwettkämpfen teil, einige arbeiteten an den Fragebögen zur gesunden Lebensweise, die bereits ein paar Wochen zuvor von den Schülern beantwortet worden waren, einige waren für Fotos und Videos zuständig und die letzte Gruppe bereitete in der Schulküche einen gesunden Imbiss vor. Der Wettkampf bestand aus Klimmziehen, Dreierhopp, Freiwürfen, Schlängellauf, Liegestützen, Seilspringen, Torwandschießen und Rumpfheben. Allen machte es großen Spaß und den Schülern gefielen besonders die für diesen Tag extra hergestellten T-Shirts mit dem “Minds At Work”_Projektlogo. Der Tag endete in unserem Schulclub mit einer gemeinsamen Mahlzeit, wo auch andere Projektarbeiten präsentiert wurden. Die Gewinner des Wettkampfes wurden mit Pokalen geehrt, alle Teilnehmer erhielten Medaillen. Dei Ergebnisse der Fragebögenauswertung wurden in Diagrammen festgehalten. Für uns wird es interessant in den Blogs der Partnerschulen zu sehen, wie diese den Comenius Sporttag durchführten und wie die Resultate der Fragebögen sind!
